Dr. Zhiquan Li
Mitacs Accelerate Postdoctoral Researcher
Li’s past research has focused on the geochemistry, geology and metallogenesis of banded iron formations (BIFs) and BIF hosted ores. His current research involves understanding the deposition of clays associated with the Prairie Evaporite Deposit and the challenges that they present in mining potash in Saskatchewan.
Brendan Bishop
PhD Candidate
Brendan’s PhD research is focused on Rare Earth Elements and lithium in the Western Canadian Sedimentary Basin. His work combines aspects of aqueous geochemistry, geochemical modelling, and machine learning.
Tianyang Hu
Visiting PhD Student
Tianyang is a PhD student visiting from Professor Lei Liu’s lab at Central South University in China and is co-supervised at the University of Regina by Dr. Guoxiang Chi. Tianyang’s research is focused Lushan-Huoqiu banded iron formation belt in the Xuhuai microblock of the North China Craton.
JULIANA VELANDIA
MSc Student (Supervised by Dr. Maria Vélez)
Juliana’s MSc research is co-supervised and is focused on reconstructing Holocene climates in southern Saskatchewan. Juliana uses a suite of tools including isotopic and trace element measurements on ostracord shells from recent lake cores.
Katie Kruetzer
Undergraduate Student Researcher
Katie's undergraduate research is focused on the element-cycling of Banded Iron Formations during the GOE. Her work uses LA-ICP-MS chemostratigraphic mapping to show the degree of terrestrial oxidative weathering of bioessential trace metal and redox-sensitive elements 2.45 billion years ago. Katie’s research was supported by an NSERC Undergraduate Research Award in summer 2023.
Tommy Avram
Undergraduate Honours Thesis Student
Tommy’s undergraduate thesis is focused on the geochemistry of lithium brines in the Western Canada Sedimentary Basin. Future graduate research at the University of Saskatchewan will be centred around transformations of secondary minerals and potential metal mobilization due to mineral instability of froth treatment mine tailings.
